Shut Down Learners
I teach dyslexic children 3 languages. They read fluently, just like any other kid, in Malay and Romanized Mandarin. They, however, are dyslexic when it comes to English.
I have asked myself as why this anomaly and have come to realise that it is because English is an orthographically inconsistent ... More-->

Don't know where to start
I just started tutoring a first grade dyslexic student in an NGO.
She's a very nice girl but she does have this attitude of making herself and others believe she does know when she barely does. I think it's her way of boosting her esteem. She always says she's familiar with the sounds but actually... More-->

Upside-Downd School Girl - Marietta Everett
In 1970 a young lady by the name of Marietta Everett was awarded a full scholarship to Alabama State University because she had an unusual "disability" - she saw the world upside-down. Fortunately for her, no one ever told her that books had to be held "right-side-up" and no one ... More-->

Learning the Alphabet
The Alphabet might seem a simple thing, but to write the letters correctly a child has to notice and copy the orientation of the letters.
I use a trick my mom taught me when I was learning to write.
The capital letters are the "parents" and the small letters are the "children&quo... More-->

Do dyslexics have a phonological awareness deficit?
It is a fallacy to state that phonological awareness deficit is the main or even one of the causes of dyslexia as claimed by many researchers and Dyslexia Associations.
Let us clearly define what is not dyslexia.
Standard exclusionary criteria include conditions that began or existed prior to sc... More-->

Working memory as dyslexia profile
Although my son has always had a diagnosis of dyslexia, upon arrival from private school to public school, they qualified him under his working memory deficit (which I always thought was a component of dyslexia). He is 15 and reading and performing math at a 6th grade level, 4 grade levels behind.

Resources for Teachers in French?
Hello,
I am a parent of a child (8) who has dyspraxia and ADD. We have not had her evaluated for dyslexia yet, because we recently moved to Switzerland and she started school in French only a year ago (we're following the advice of a pediatric psychiatrist, on this score). Nevertheless, she does ... More-->

DRA
Our school uses the DRA; I don't see how the DRA could be used as an assessment of dyslexia. It could, however, provide a clue that a child is dyslexic - e.g., the DRA measures a few things - comprehension and decoding among them. It would stand to reason that if a child has trouble decoding, he o... More-->
