Before you spend your money on the many great summer programs available for dylexic students , consider the following:
If your child has an IEP, you can request a PPT to determine Extended School Services. ESY is not summer school. ESY is not a summer reading packet that the teacher gives your child specifically to help with the dyslexia. ESY is not limited to a specific disability category. Many people think dyslexic children just need to enroll in a library reading program to improve during the summer. ESY, as some educators may tell you, has nothing to do with staffing or school budgets. I have found that some educators know little about ESY and have misled many parents.
ESY is a continuation of services to insure that the child does not regress. In the case of dyslexic students, ESY must be considred at each PPT meeting as well as assistive technology. With ESY, your child should be able to receive during the summer speech, intensive and research based reading programs, fluency tutoring, etc., It all depends on the data that is available on your child to support the need for ESY.
Work with your school. Call an advocacy group to fully understand ESY. If your child is not in special ed., you can still call a PPT.
My child is getting ESY-- If not, I would be spending over $10,000 for a summer program. Instead, the school system will continue to give him his support throughout the summer. Get an advocate and understand the rights of your child. Don't sit back and think the school will fully service your child. There is a saying in special education, "if the parent does not ask for a specific service--do not give the service." In this case, it is ESY. |

Just to be clear, the extended day option involves the SCHOOL-day till 2:30ish and not an entire day in general.
I wouldnt want a first time working parent of a five year old out there to think that their little one can be enrolled in a Lakewood kindergarten program for free until the end of the work day. |
