If it works do it. I don't fully buy into it. But, that does not mean anything on my part.

I focus on the educational aspect, IEP goals implemtation and progress monitoring, having an advocate, etc.

Also, I was told that my son was ADHD. The doctor told us that he was not ADHD---he needed time to mature. Now, he is the most mature young man in his school, still a dyslexic and will always be but is progressing as we have a great advocate, etc.

I tried supplements but the journey of life worked better, a strong advocate and a parent who is very determined.

PostPost subject: Natural Supplements - Thumbs Up    Posted: Thu May 24, 2012 5:53 pm Reply with quote

I just read Jon Bennett's story and based on what he wrote, there is really no need to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with drugs such as Ritalin, also known as methylphenidate, by the way. It is definitely worth a try using natural nutritional supplements. Luckily, there is no deficit in those. Lots of them can be bought on Amazon and here http://supplementlocker.com/
My point is, if things are not that bad yet, don't jump into use strong drugs, give natural supplements a go and see how it goes. You never know, right? Why change someone's personality?

I have always been sceptical of giving my son supplements, you don't want to change your kids personality because of strong medication. However I don't think this supplement is as strong as the other more common meds i.e. ritalin.

I haven't fully read what Jon Bennett had to say about medication. Although, I know from experience with my dyslexia and attention problems that this could easily be supplemented by L-Tyrosine. This is an amino acid which is an ingredient that will convert to L-DOPA and down the path to dopamine. ADHD is generally speaking a low dopamine malfunction. Ritalin and other stimulants for ADHD target the dopamine receptors in the prefrontal cortex. L-Tyrosine is extremely light in comparasen and is not a stimulant. It would simply replenish the naturally occurring process for the dopamine receptors. It is non-addictive and won't change ones personality.

There seems to be some validity to this. However, it depends on the person and I don't believe this can be generalizable as ADHD meds would be. Might be one factor in why people are skeptical about supplements.

P.S. I am not a doctor simply a student who knows about learning disabilities and have taken a few neuroscience classes. I've taken L-tyrosine myself.
