YCD&C Marks 2018 International Day of the Girl
On this International Day of the Girl for 2018, we want to draw special attention to the girls and young women who are facing the challenge of dyslexia head on. At the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity we are proud of our groundbreaking research that uncovered that girls are as likely to be dyslexic as boys. For too long, dyslexia was thought to be something that primarily occurs in boys, leaving girls to struggle unnecessarily. But why? Classroom norms often resulted in boys who are a bit “rambunctious” being referred for further evaluation, while quieter girls who were struggling to read were overlooked. Although that dynamic is changing for the better, we still have a long way to go to make sure that every girl who has an unexpected difficulty in learning to read gets the screening and help she needs to succeed. #DayOfTheGirl
